Magnesium glycinate

Glycinate pairs magnesium with glycine. It contains a lower proportion of elemental magnesium by compound weight than oxide, so a larger amount of compound is needed to supply the same labelled elemental-magnesium amount.

Magnesium citrate

Citrate pairs magnesium with citric acid. The NIH lists citrate among forms that are absorbed more completely than magnesium oxide. Higher supplemental amounts can also have a digestive or laxative effect.

Magnesium oxide

Oxide contains a high proportion of magnesium by compound weight, making it useful in formulas designed to provide a large labelled magnesium dose in a relatively small amount of ingredient material. It is less completely absorbed than several more soluble forms.
